Safety Tips for on the Road
Motorists are reminded that the volumes of vehicles on the road will steadily increase until the schools reopen and all motorists and pedestrians are encouraged to travel responsibly.
A slower travelling speed gives you more time to react in an emergency situation and also decreases the stopping distance. According to Arrive Alive the majority of collisions are preceded by a transgression or transgressions of the rules of the road i.e. speeding, reckless driving, overtaking on solid lines etc. Speeding and alcohol abuse result in unnecessary tragedies.
Pedestrians should wear light coloured clothing and walk on the side of the road facing oncoming traffic and only cross the road at designated pedestrian crossings.
All motorists should increase their following distance, travel at a safe and appropriate speed and switch their vehicles head lights on to make themselves more visible to other road users.
Have your vehicle checked by a professional to ensure that it is in a roadworthy condition and remember to ensure that your first aid kit is fully stocked- replace old or damaged safety gloves and safely dispose of expired ointments/medications.
Motorists are reminded that a long journey should begin the night before with a good nights rest and no or low alcohol consumption. Stopping for regular breaks along the route also helps to prevent driver fatigue.
